Return to Buenos Aires — Patagonia 2024

We left the hotel at ten for a three and a half hour flight to Buenos Aires. The Ushuaia airport has the feel of a timber lodge and the experience would have been charming except the line to check in with Aerolíneas Argentina (the domestic federal airline) stretched all the way down the length of the airport and began circling back up for some reason (well, maybe it was a different reason than “too few people at the counters”?).

Once we had settled back in to a different room at the same hotel we’d been in before (the ARC Recoleta) in BA we had a couple hours on our own in the afternoon. We walked to a pharmacy to re-stock on decongestant and cough drops, then got a few beers to enjoy on the rooftop patio of the hotel. Then we had a group meeting of our tour to say farewell to the few people who were not continuing with the Iguazú Falls tour extension. Barby, our tour guide, had everyone take turns telling what their favorite moment or part of the tour was, then she showed us this video she made that I’m pretty sure contained every favorite part that was mentioned.

After the meeting we rode the bus to a farewell dinner at Villegas Resto & Grill. I got a nice photo of the opera house as we drove by.

The dinner was a lighter version of the asado we had with Hernán and Gabriela when we’d first arrived in BA. The dessert was the best part: a crepe stuffed with dulce de leche, then covered with sugar that was slightly burnt.

After dinner we walked a little way down this trendy waterfront area of Puerto Madero and across the nearby Puente de la Mujer.

Unfortunately Oscar’s wallet disappeared sometime either during dinner or while walking through the many people out on the bridge and waterfront. The good news is that he had only his driver’s license and some cash in the wallet at the time.
