Buffy Chicken

Our Buffy chicken did not quite make it to seven years old. Buffy was the soft-and-fluffiest and also softest-hearted of our four original hens. She had a soft voice and liked to make silly little grumbly cooing sounds, too.

Buffy meeting our friend and neighbor, Sally. Unfortunately, Buffy pecked Sally's eye shortly after the photo -- doh! -- I guess it was shiny.

Buffy stretching out to absorb as much heat as possible. Once she fluffed up, you'd never know she had a long neck like that.

I'm not sure if Buffy jumped between them, or got squeezed. In any case, she had plenty of fluff to keep the other chickens warm on one of their first nights sleeping outside.
Most recent Buffy photo. For the past couple years, her feathers no longer smoothed together like they used to, and she had more of rough-coated look.

Buffy had slowed down quite a bit since late summer, and would occasionally spend a few days at a time seeming very tired. I’m not sure exactly what went wrong, but she got very tired again. She managed to enjoy some sunshine and a few treats on her last day, then I realized something was wrong when we took our night-time dog walk.

We’re down to just two chickens (Roxy and Aussie), so we’ll be getting some new chicks in the spring.
